2023 MARKS 30 YEARS OF VIVES’ MUSICAL JOURNEY
Listen to “La Historia” HERE.
Miami, FL. (February 10, 2023) – For Colombian music icon Carlos Vives, 2023 marks 30 years of music with La Provincia for the artist. It all began with a television show role, inspired by the life and work of the famed Rafael Escalona, which catapulted him to stardom at the beginning of the 90s. 30 years later, he returned to the studio after decades of success, to release the first single from his upcoming album, Escalona: Nunca Se Había Grabado Así. With “La Historia,” Vives brings the classic vallenato sound and opens a range of nostalgia, with lyrics singing of a love that has already died.
The release of “La Historia” begins an emotional year full of celebrations and festivities that will evoke the nostalgia of the 90s, but that will also show how far his music has come and the path traveled during these 30 years by the greatest figure of Colombian music in the world, Carlos Vives.
With Vives, Vallenato folklore had a new voice and gave fresh air to the traditional sounds. The versions of the songs in the TV series are far from the contemporary Colombian sound that Carlos Vives created with “La Provincia.” Motivated by the memory and nostalgia of that time in his life, Vives decided to embark on a journey that took him to Villanueva, Guajira, where after an emotional meeting with his friend and compadre Egidio Cuadrado, ventured in search of the vallenato dream team. Vives gathered all the members of “La Provincia” to work on the lost notebook of Rafael Escalona, a treasure that Dina Luz has had in her possession for years.

On the upcoming album, Vives, Cuadrado and “La Provincia” remake Escalona’s songs with a touch of modernity, including the discoveries and sound connections that were protagonists in the Colombian music revolution. Based on Escalona’s notes, the pair imagined how each song should sound in modern times, without losing their original feel. For Carlos, it was necessary to redefine the sound of Escalona so that the new generations could discover the songs of the maestro, just as it happened in the 90s with La Gota Fría.
