Miami, FL (January 22, 2024) – The City of Downey’s Mayor Mario Trujillo will honor Lupita Infante with the Mayor’s Excellence Award in recognition of her pivotal role in carrying on her family’s musical legacy and standing firm in her mission to empower women through her music in a tradition historically dominated by men.
Lupita Infante, 3x Grammy-nominated Mexican American singer-songwriter, is part of an emerging generation of ranchera artists who are so deeply steeped in their traditions that they possess the confidence and expertise to brilliantly remake them for their Millennial and Gen Z fans. The Infante name is instantly familiar to tens of millions of Mexicans, as she is the granddaughter of Pedro Infante Cruz (1917-1957), one of the most beloved Mexican singers and actors of the 20th century.
The Mayor’s Excellence Award celebrates individuals’ selfless dedication and
commitment to going above and beyond for others. This honor is awarded to those whose heartfelt contributions and notable accomplishments have proven invaluable to the community, playing a vital role in advancing the shared goal of making the city a better place for all.
“As Lupita’s former kindergarten teacher, I am proud of her accomplishments and commitment to paying tribute to the tradition and beauty of our heritage. She is a role model for the Latin community and women. Downey is proud to be called home by great leaders like Lupita Infante,” said Mayor Mario Trujillo.
“It’s a full circle moment because I first met Mayor Mario Trujillo when he was my teacher in elementary school. I’m dedicating this award to my mother, who first came to Downey looking for a brighter future, and to this beautiful city that has helped shape my path in life and music,” said Lupita Infante.
The award presentation is scheduled to take place during the Downey City Council meeting on January 23, 2024, at City Hall 11111 Brookshire Avenue, Downey, CA 90241.
