The Colombian icon took over the GRAMMY® Awards Pre-telecast ceremony with a medley including his global hits “La Gota Fría” and “Pa’ Mayte”
The soundtrack for the film “Encanto”, for which Vives collaborated on with the track “Colombia, Mi Encanto”, was honored with two GRAMMY® Awards
Miami, FL. (6 de febrero de 2023) – Multi-platinum singer-songwriter and Colombian icon Carlos Vives for the first time graced the pre-telecast stage of the GRAMMY® Awards, where he celebrated his 30-year career. Vives was nominated in the category “Best Tropical Latin Album” for his critically acclaimed album “Cumbiana II”. The annual GRAMMY® Awards ceremony broadcast live on Sunday, February 6 from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California.
“Thirty years ago, Vives revolutionized Latin music globally, and gave us a look at the ancient sounds of Colombia, created a new Tropical-Pop fusion and took it to the next level. Nominated for “Best Tropical Latin Album” with Cumbiana II, we give you Carlos Vives!”. With these words, pre-telecat host Randy Rainbow announced Vives to the stage.
Accompanied by his renowned band La Provincia, Vives gave a high-energy and visually enticing presentation that made the audience dance to the rhythm of his global hit songs “La Gota Fría” and “Pa’ Mayte”. His stellar performance included a full orchestra, typical Colombian instruments alongside his band and back-up singers. Without a doubt, Vives created one of the most memorable moments of the ceremony and demonstrated once again the pride he feels for his roots, transmitting that same passion to the audience, who rose from their seats to dance and give the Colombian icon a standing ovation.
His most recent album, “Cumbiana II”, which was nominated for “Best Tropical Latin Album” for this year’s GRAMMY® Awards, was chosen by Billboard as one of the “Best Latin Albums of 2022”. This is the second album to emerge from Carlos Vives‘ expansive and unprecedented exploration, to make modern music from the percussive and melodic sounds of ancestral Colombia, which is at the origins and evolution of cumbia, the convergence of rhythms and cultures that he symbolically defines as “everything we are”. This album was awarded two Latin GRAMMY® 2022 for “Best Pop/Rock Song” (for Babel with Fito Páez) and “Best Contemporary Tropical Album” for Cumbiana II.
In addition, the body of musical work for the movie “Encanto”, where Vives collaborated on the track “Colombia, Mi Encanto”, a GRAMMY® Award for “Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media”, “Best Song Written for Visual Media” and it’s score won for “Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media”.
In 2023, Carlos Vives is celebrating his thirty year anniversary in music, which began with the broadcast of the beloved television series in which he starred, which was inspired by the life and work of the immortal Rafael Escalona. This year, Carlos Vives brought together his “compadre” Egidio Cuadrado and La Provincia to re-record songs by the immortal Rafael Escalona, and will soon release the album “Escalona Never Had Recorded Like This” (Escalona Nunca Se Había Grabado Así”). Kicking off an emotional year full of celebrations, this coming Thursday, February 9th, he will release the first single from the album titled “La Historia”.
